What is Graduated Licensing?

New drivers in Ontario must go through the Graduated Licensing System, a two step licensing process that takes 20 months to complete. More information can be found on the Ministry of Transportation Web site.

 

OTIP offers discounts for drivers who have successfully completed driver training and graduated licensing.

What is the impact of graduated licensing on my insurance policy premium?

New drivers in Ontario must go through the Graduated Licensing system through the Ministry of Transportation before they can get a full driver's license.

 

G1 Driver

  • You should advise your insurance company that there is a G1 driver in your house.
  • There is no premium charge for a G1 driver.
  • Completing a course from an approved driving school will reduce future premiums, provided the driver has no at-fault accidents or chargeable convictions.

 

G2 Driver

  • A premium charge will apply for a G2 driver.
  • Credit will be given for one year's driving experience for completing G1 and the G2 driver will receive a rate reduction of 10% for all coverages for a period of one year.
  • Driver training discounts also apply, where applicable.
