2007 Teaching Awards Honourees

Danielle Honour – Elementary Teacher

Grade 2

Norseman Junior Middle School, Toronto

Toronto District School Board

Danielle Honour’s remarkable ability to inspire and motivate children to learn has made her a favourite at Norseman Junior Middle School. Ms. Honour keeps a close eye on all of her students and ensures they all feel included and welcome, but her interest in teaching extends outside her own school’s walls. Ms. Honour took a major role in raising funds to build a school house in Kenya and initiated the Friends Across the City project – linking her class with another Toronto school with a different ethnic and socio-economic make up.

Martin Aller-Stead – Secondary Teacher

Senior Level/Co-operative Education Teacher

Monarch Park Collegiate, Toronto

Toronto District School Board

An educator who rarely, if ever slows down, Martin Aller-Stead is known for his commitment to his students. To ensure they start their careers off right, Mr. Aller-Stead is devoted to finding the best co-op placements for each student he works with. Mr. Aller-Stead’s investment in his students extends into the community as well. He organizes the annual “A Very Halal Christmas Dinner” during which students host 250 seniors and veterans for a family dinner. His colleagues assert that Mr. Aller-Stead makes all students--regardless of economic, social or physical ability or disability--successful if they choose to be, and include that he is a constant support and provider of hope for many who never thought they would get a chance.

Danielle Corsini – Beginning Teacher

Mathematics, Grades 9, 10 and 11

St. Mary Catholic Secondary School, Hamilton

Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board

In only her second year of teaching, Ms. Corsini strives to make every lesson engaging, incorporating demonstrations, visuals, games, real-life examples, cross-word puzzles and hands-on activities into her classes. She fosters self-esteem in her students by encouraging group board work and doling out rounds of applause for a job well done. Ms. Corsini has helped her students reach out to those in need by accompanying them to the Dominican Republic to build houses and assisting in organizing a pilgrimage walk for the poor.
