Employment Insurance FAQ

I have run out of sick leave credits and my LTD benefits are not due to start for three months. Am I eligible for Employment Insurance (EI) benefits?

Teachers may be eligible for EI sickness benefits while on unpaid sick leave during a teaching period. All education employees who meet EI requirements are eligible for benefits; however, there are some differences in the rules for the teaching profession because of contractual arrangements.

In order to qualify for EI sickness benefits, you must have 600 insurable hours in the last 52 weeks. There is a 2-week waiting period and you can receive benefits for a maximum period of 15 weeks. It usually takes 3 to 4 weeks to process your claim.

I am receiving Employment Insurance (EI) sickness benefits. Will I be required to repay the EI sickness benefits to Human Resources Development Canada if my LTD claim is approved?

Generally, you will not be required to return the money unless you are collecting LTD benefits during the same time period.
