Alicia Gunn
Meet Alicia Gunn – Beginning Teacher
Grade 3
Oakridge Public School, Mississauga
Peel District School Board
To understand Alicia Gunn’s contribution as an educator, we have to look at the community in which she works. Many of the students at Oakridge Public School in Mississauga are new immigrants from families with no English language skills. Almost 90 per cent of Oakridge’s students are bussed to school and there is no public transit link from the apartments where most of the children live. It’s nearly impossible for their families to connect with the school. With a colleague, Ms. Gunn formed the Oakridge Community Action Committee and an after-school program, introducing students to swimming, soccer, tennis and playground games. To ensure everyone has a chance to participate, she arranged for transportation back to the apartment complexes too. A teacher of social justice, Ms. Gunn selects an “ism” each month and works with her students on understanding the principles of respect, cooperation and common sense.
