7 road trips in Ontario you have to take before summer ends

In Canada, we cherish the long-awaited summertime. Whether it's a wilderness expedition or a day at the beach, making every glorious day count is important! Ontario has many experiences to offer, and with just a few short months of warm weather, road trips are essential. That's why we've compiled a list of the best road trips in Ontario to soak up the sights.

Huron County
When it comes to adventuring in Ontario, it doesn't get better than Huron County. Internationally known as Ontario's West Coast, the county is home to more than 100 km of sandy shoreline, luscious countryside, and charming, historic villages. Between exploring the picturesque hiking trails, lounging at the beach, and enjoying the rich culture, there's something for everyone.

Boreal Driving Route
Unlike anything you'll find in southern Ontario, this is the road trip you didn't know you needed. Experience Canada's vast and beautiful Boreal Forest on this driving route with ten unique stops along the way. Ontario Parks describes it as "a region that many Canadians will never see, yet offers so much in terms of history, culture, and natural wonder."

Port Stanley
There's no need to travel to Malibu to appreciate an exquisite beach and colourful waterfront homes. You only need to drive 2.5 hours from Toronto to find it. Located in Elgin County, Port Stanley offers one of the finest stretches of sandy beach on the north shore of Lake Erie and a downtown core full of quaint boutiques and restaurants to try. If that's not enough, there are many marinas and a golf course that you can visit too.

Long Sault Parkway
Do you love taking the scenic route? Then you'll undoubtedly like Long Sault Parkway. The parkway is a series of 11 islands created after the St. Laurence River flooded in the 1950s. On Macdonell Island, you can learn about the fascinating story behind the Lost Villages at the bottom of the river. Not only are there beaches and campgrounds en route, but the parkway is also cyclist-friendly for those feeling extra adventuresome.

Forks of the Credit
This is a classic drive to add to your road trip plans. Located in Caledon and on the famous Bruce Trail, the road leading to the provincial park features twists and turns and magnificent views. Some of the favourite local activities include fishing, hiking, and picnicking. Be sure to return in the winter, as it's also a popular spot for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

Prince Edward County
Of all the places to visit in Ontario, The County truly is one-of-a-kind. Views of never-ending farmland, tiny towns, vineyards, and the pristine shores of Sandbanks Provincial Park make this road trip extra special. Stop for a tasting at one of the many wineries, craft breweries, or cideries, browse for rare antiques, and pick up a few fresh small-town goodies to nibble at on the ride home.

Niagara Parkway
As one of the oldest parkways in Ontario, this 55 km drive runs parallel to the expansive Niagara River, from Niagara on the Lake down to Fort Erie. When Sir Winston Churchill visited Niagara Falls in 1943, he said the Niagara Parkway is the "prettiest Sunday afternoon drive in the world." Some noteworthy stops to pull over for include The Butterfly Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, the White-Water Walk, Queen Victoria Park, and Old Fort Erie.

While we hope your next road trip is smooth sailing, not everything goes as expected. It's vital that you review your insurance policy well before leaving, so you know what you're covered for. That way, you can hit the open roads of Ontario with peace of mind.
