How do I add dental coverage to my RTIP plan?
RTIP dental coverage is optional and can be added to any of our retiree health plans. Your coverage start date may vary depending on when the change is received.
Plan changes received prior to the 15th of the month will be made effective as of the 1st of that month. Any changes received after the 15th of the month will be made effective in the following month.
Note: You must be enrolled in an RTIP health plan to add dental coverage. Dental coverage applies to all covered persons under your plan.
To add dental coverage, please email planchangesandbilling@rtip.otip.com for support. All change requests must be made in writing.
If you purchase or add this coverage at a later date, there is no penalty or restriction period before you can claim full benefits. The only requirement is that you remain enrolled for at least 12 months after adding dental care to your plan. If you decide to cancel your dental coverage after the minimum 12-month requirement, you must wait 24 months before you can repurchase it.

How do I start an RTIP claim for a trip emergency?

Helpful tip: Dial 00 for an international operator. If calling from a cell phone, you may need to dial 00-519-742-3556 and request with an operator (not an automated system) to make a collect call. After providing the number you are trying to reach, the operator will confirm that we accept the charges.
Travel claims are paid directly to the provider by OTIP Travel Assistance where possible. Travel claims, must be received by OTIP Travel Assistance no later than 12 months from the date the eligible expense was incurred.
If you need to pay up front, be sure to ask for an itemized bill from the service provider and detailed physician’s notes including an assessment of your medical condition. Be sure to contact OTIP Travel Assistance prior to making any payment, if feasible.
You can submit your claims to OTIP Travel Assistance (CanAssistance) in one of two ways:
Make sure you tell OTIP Travel Assistance about all the travel coverage you have when submitting claims. Claims must be submitted together with supporting original receipts to OTIP Travel Assistance. At time of claim, you will be required to fill out a claim form which includes questions regarding services rendered. Claims cannot be assessed until the claim form and all required documentation is submitted.

How does the Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB) program work with RTIP?
The ODB program covers the majority of the cost for more than 5,000 prescription drug products for Ontario residents over the age of 65.

What do RTIP members have to pay?
For all RTIP members aged 65 and older, the deductible you pay at the start of the ODB benefit year (runs from August to July) is $100. For example: when filling a prescription at the pharmacy in August at the start of the ODB coverage year, the RTIP member is required to pay:
- The one-time $100 deductible; and
- Up to $6.11 for each drug prescribed, filled, or refilled until the $100 yearly limit set by ODB is reached. This amount is called the co-payment.
Once you reach your $100 limit, you will have to pay out of pocket for prescriptions as your RTIP Plan does not cover ODB drugs. Drugs not covered under ODB can be reimbursed through your RTIP plan. The one-time $100 deductible is eligible for reimbursement from your RTIP plan (not including the dispensing fee).

Can my dependants be covered by RTIP?
To be eligible for coverage as an overage dependant* under your RTIP policy, after reaching age 21, your child must:
- be unmarried;
- be a full-time student at an accredited school, college, university, or educational institution;
- not be a contract holder directly with RTIP or eligible for insurance as an employee under any other group benefits plan;
- not be employed on a full-time basis.
*Coverage for overage dependants will continue up to age 31, if the above criteria continue to be met. Please log into your RTIP plan member site to view your RTIP contract for the definition of a “child.”
Dependant reaching age 21: If your child is enrolled in a full-time program and requires coverage to be continued, you must contact RTIP prior to your dependant reaching age 21 and complete the Overage Dependent Student form to ensure continuation of coverage.
Dependants between 21 to 30: Recertification of coverage for eligible overage dependants is required on an annual basis.
Coverage for overage disabled dependants: Dependants over 21 may be eligible for coverage or continued coverage when incapable of self-sustaining support due to a mental or physical disability that occurred prior to age 21.
Please note that any two family members can qualify for couple coverage. If you do not have an eligible spouse, you and your dependent child can qualify for couple rates.
Are surgery expenses subject to per visit maximums for a podiatrist or chiropodist?
RTIP members only:
No, surgery expenses are not subject to the per visit maximums for these specific services. These services are covered for 80% reimbursement of eligible charges, up to a combined maximum of $1,350 per calendar year for all paramedical services.
I am an RTIP member. Will I receive a T4A slip?
For members with health and/or dental insurance through RTIP (Retired Teachers Insurance Plan), you will receive a receipt for insurance premiums that you paid in this tax year via email or mail by late February.
If you have recently retired within the current tax year and your Basic Life and/or Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) premiums accumulated to more than $25 in the year, you will receive a T4A tax slip from OTIP via mail by the end of February. If you retired prior to the current tax year, you are not eligible for a T4A tax slip.
How do I check to see what is covered under my RTIP health and/or dental benefits? How much coverage do I have?
- After you’ve logged into your My Member Account, please select your retiree plan listed under My coverage.
- Within the My Retiree Benefits dashboard, click Go to RTIP plan member site. This will bring you to the RTIP plan member site where you can view your RTIP contract and coverage details.
- Select Your Health Benefits and click Check coverage.
I am an RTIP member. How do I update my email address?
- After you have logged into My Member Account, select your name/account icon in the top right-hand corner of the page and then click Account settings.
- In the My Member Account section, you will be able to update your My Member Account email address.
- Click Change email address and add your preferred personal email address.
IMPORTANT: This will update your preferred email for all OTIP communications, RTIP service communications, and your EdvantagePerks login.
I am an RTIP member and I have moved to a new home. How do I change my address?
- After you’re logged into your My Member Account, please select your retiree plan listed under My coverage.
- Within the My Retiree Benefits dashboard, click Go to RTIP plan member site.
- Select your name in the top right-hand corner of the page and then select Your OTIP Account from the drop-down menu.
- Select the Who and Where? drop-down box to update your address.
- Click Save Changes.
I am an RTIP member and I have immediate questions on retiree health, dental and travel insurance. What should I do?

I am an RTIP member. How do I send documents related to a claim online?
For any claims that are already on file but were denied, you will need to submit additional information on the RTIP plan member site.
Please follow the steps below:
- After you’ve logged into My Member Account, select your retiree plan listed under My coverage.
- Within the My Retiree Benefits dashboard, click Go to RTIP plan member site.
- Click the Your Claims drop-down menu and select Claims History.
- Find the specific claim that needs additional information to be approved and click the + button on the right-hand side to expand information.
- Select Upload and add the correct document from your computer to that claim.

If you need to send Drug (or Medical Services) Prior Authorization forms online:
- After you have logged into your member account follow steps 1-3 above to access your RTIP plan member site and then click Contact us.
- Select Send documents and then complete the steps.

Is my child attending school out of country eligible for travel coverage under my RTIP plan?
Eligible expenses for covered dependent children studying outside their province of residence will be considered under the health care plan on the same basis as if expenses were incurred in their province of residence (provincial government health insurance coverage must remain in place).
Emergency travel coverage is limited to 100 days. Therefore, it will be important to purchase individual travel insurance to cover your covered dependent children after the 100 consecutive travel days. Top-up travel insurance can be purchased through Allianz Global Assistance at 1-866-520-8823 or 519-742-9013.

Travel coverage for overage disabled dependants
There is no age limit for unmarried, dependent children who are incapable of self-sustaining support due to a mental or physical disability that occurred prior to age 21. I am an RTIP member. Does my benefits plan cover my dependants for travel emergencies?
Dependants listed under your RTIP health plan will be covered for travel emergencies.
RTIP travel insurance covers eligible members and dependants for $10 million per lifetime for emergency services while travelling outside your province of residence. Coverage is for up to 100 consecutive days per trip with an unlimited number of trips per year.

How do I send a secure online note to the RTIP Contact Centre?
- After you’ve logged into My Member Account at otip.com, please select Help centre.
- At the bottom of the Help centre page, select Get started from the Send us a message section.
I am an RTIP member. How do I print off additional benefits cards for my dependants?
- After you’ve logged into My Member Account, select your retiree plan listed under My coverage.
- Within the My Retiree Benefits dashboard, select View/download benefit card.
NOTE: The benefits card will only be under the name of the plan member (i.e. will not be under the name of a spouse or dependant). However, you can print off as many cards as you need and give them to any family member who is covered under your plan.
I am an RTIP member. How do I sign up for direct deposit for my claim payments?
- After you’ve logged into My Member Account, select your retiree plan listed under My coverage.
- Within the My Retiree Benefits dashboard, click Go to RTIP plan member site.
- Select your profile tab in the top right-hand corner and click Your OTIP Account.
- Select Payments and within the Direct Deposit drop down menu you can enter the transit number, institution number, account number and re-enter account number.
- Check the authorization statement for us to update your banking information and click Save Changes. A confirmation screen should appear confirming that your banking information has been updated.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
- It is recommended that you make these changes on your personal computer.
- Access to the plan member site is restricted to North America.
I am an RTIP member and submitted a claim for a service at the per-visit maximum. When I received my reimbursement, I did not get the full amount back. Why did this happen?
All RTIP plans include 80% reimbursement of eligible charges, up to a combined maximum of $1,350 per calendar year for paramedical services.
Please refer to your RTIP contract through My Member Account to get more details about your coverage.
To view your RTIP contract online:
- After you’ve logged into My Member Account, select your retiree plan listed under My coverage.
- Within the My Retiree Benefits dashboard, click Go to RTIP plan member site.
- In the RTIP member site, click your name in the top right-hand corner of the page and then select Your OTIP Account from the drop-down menu.
- Under the Your Coverage tab, select Your RTIP Contract. You can also access a travel coverage confirmation letter, if required.
I have an overage disabled dependant. How do I ensure they have coverage under my RTIP plan?
Dependants over 21 may be eligible for coverage or continued coverage when incapable of self-sustaining support due to a mental or physical disability that occurred prior to age 21. Proof of the dependant’s condition must be provided within 30 days, after attainment of the limiting age (age 21).

We will verify that your plan has coverage for your dependant and provide you with the Overage Disabled Dependant Coverage form to be completed and returned for review of eligibility (if not already completed).
I am an RTIP member and will be going on an extended vacation. How do I get enough medication to take with me on vacation?
At any time, RTIP members can receive or order an extra supply of medication from their local pharmacy and not pay out of pocket. The pharmacy will update RTIP on the member’s behalf that the medication request was for extra day supply.

How do I get a summary of my RTIP claims for the last year?
- After you’ve logged into your My Member Account, please select your retiree plan listed under My coverage.
- Within the My Retiree Benefits dashboard, click Go to RTIP plan member site. This will bring you to the RTIP plan member site where you can view your RTIP contract and coverage details.
- Click Your Claims and then select Claims History from the drop-down menu.
- When viewing your claims history, you will be able to search by claim type, date, family member, and status.
How do I add a dependant to my RTIP plan?
To add a dependant to your RTIP health insurance plan, please contact the RTIP Contact Centre at 1-833-318-2811 to receive a copy of the Health and Dental Change form.
The form must be completed and signed within 30 days of the dependant first becoming eligible. Otherwise, your dependant(s) may be subject to late entrant requirements. Please contact the RTIP Contact Centre at your earliest convenience.
How do I change my password for my online RTIP member account?
- After you have logged in to My Member Account, click your name/account icon in the top right-hand corner of the page.
- Click Account settings.
- Click Security and change your password. You can also create a PIN to help with quick identification when calling the RTIP Contact Centre.
How do I check the status of a claim under my RTIP plan?
- After you’ve logged into your My Member Account, please select your retiree plan listed under My coverage on the homepage.
- Within the My Retiree Benefits dashboard, select Check my claim status or history. This will bring you to the RTIP plan member site where you can see recent claims.
How do I submit claims online through my RTIP plan and check the status of those claims?
- After you’ve logged into My Member Account, select your retiree plan listed under My coverage.
- Within the My Retiree Benefits dashboard, click Submit a claim and follow the steps provided.
To check the status of a recently submitted claim, you can visit your retiree dashboard in My Member Account and select Check my claims status or history under the My claims bar.
I’m not sure if my recent drug prescription is covered by my RTIP plan. How can I check my drug coverage eligibility?
- After you’ve logged into My Member Account, select your retiree plan listed under My coverage.
- Within the My Retiree Benefits dashboard, click Go to RTIP plan member site.
- This will bring you to the RTIP plan member site where you can view your RTIP contract and coverage details, as well as submit an estimate.
Once in the RTIP member site:
- Click Your Health Benefits.
- Select Drug.
- Enter the drug name or Drug Identification Number (DIN).
- Click Search.
What travel coverage do I have under my RTIP plan?

Information on benefits, exclusions, and confirmations of coverage: Confirmation of your coverage and verify specific exclusions that may apply. OTIP Travel Assistance (CanAssistance) can also provide, upon request, a confirmation of coverage letter, which includes: your first and last name, travel dates, insurer’s name, RTIP ID number, people covered under the plan, and amount of coverage ($). The confirmation also provides instructions on how to reach us abroad.
