Be your home’s hero against natural hazards

Some types of claims are beyond our control. However, some losses can be prevented. Here are some of the most common home insurance claims and straightforward steps you can take to protect your property.

Water

Water damage is the leading cause of home insurance claims across Canada. Whether the culprit is a backed-up sewer, broken or burst pipes, heavy rain, or the spring thaw, water seems to make its way into even the smallest nooks and crannies.

To prevent hefty water damage, keep these tips in mind:

  • Watch out for icicles hanging from your roof – they can indicate that an ice dam has formed, which may allow water into your home and cause damage to your roof.

  • Keep your downspouts clear of any blockage, angle them at least six feet away from your house, or install extensions to avoid basement leaks.

  • Seal any cracks in your foundation and basement floors before heavy downpours or the spring thaw.

  • Shut off the water supply to your outdoor faucet, drain any remaining water, and disconnect and store your garden hose to prevent them from freezing and bursting.

  • Ensure you have the correct grading around your property – any soil, walkways, and patios should slope away from your home to allow for proper drainage.

  • Keep your pipes clog-free and running smoothly by pouring grease, fats, and oils into the compost instead of down the drain. Test your shut-off valves and sump pump every six months to ensure they are in good working order.

Hail and wind

Damage caused by hail (and the wind that goes along with it) is the first runner-up for popular home insurance claims. The wind is only partially to blame when it comes to wind-related damage. It’s the objects that are picked up and tossed around your property that tend to be the problem.

Here are a few ways to keep those hail and wind risks at bay:

  • Frequently inspect your roof and have any missing or damaged shingles replaced by a professional roofing contractor.

  • Keep nearby trees and shrubs trimmed and be sure to remove any loose or dead branches that could become airborne in a storm.

  • Secure or store any patio furniture, planters, or outdoor tools that could be damaged by hail or wind.

  • Avoid personal injury by staying indoors and keeping kids and pets away from glass windows and doors that could be shattered or broken.

Fire

Although typical, fire is one of the most preventable causes of home insurance claims.

To keep your home fire-free, don’t forget to:

  • To avoid a fire while cooking, roll up your long sleeves, place lids on bubbling pots, and turn pan handles away from curious kids and pets.

  • Have your chimney inspected and cleaned by a professional every year.

  • Keep your fireplace safe by opening the damper before lighting it and leaving the flue open – always use a fireplace screen to keep your floors free of embers.

  • If you’re painting, always dispose of paint or solvent-soaked rags by following the manufacturer’s directions, as these rags are known to self-combust.

  • Always hire an appropriately licensed professional for electrical work in your home.

  • If you smoke, take it outside and park your butts in a can of water or sand – cigarette butts that fall through a crack on a wooden deck could ignite any dry plant material underneath.
