    • Are on the school board occasional teachers roster and
    • Have worked a minimum of 302 full days in the previous school year
  • If you enrol in the plan, you are required to stay in the plan for 12 months, from September 1 to August 31.
  • A portion of your premiums may be paid by your school board. To learn more about your funding arrangement, you can contact your school board or refer to your invitation to participate in the plan.

  • 2On a without prejudice basis, this temporary change of 30 days is only for the 2019-20 school year. The next school year (2020-21) will follow the standard eligibility requirements.

Who is eligible

Eligibility for the OECTA OT Benefits Plan is determined by your school board.

If you are eligible, you will receive an email invitation from OTIP in August/September.

How to participate

To have coverage under the plan, you must complete the following:

  1. You must complete and submit the Eligibility Authorization Form below by the date indicated in your invitation from OTIP. An email will be sent to you to confirm that we have received your form. (Toronto Catholic District School Board members do not need to complete the Eligibility Authorization Form as participation in the OECTA OT Benefits Plan is mandatory.)
  2. You will receive an enrolment email within 10 business days of submitting your form. You must enrol in the plan within 31 days of receiving your enrolment email to have the coverage you require. Not enrolling by this date will result in no coverage for the entire benefit year.

You cannot make changes to your coverage after the enrolment period even with a life event (e.g. marriage, common-law, divorce, birth of a child, adoption).

If you are required to provide proof of good health (evidence of insurability):

  • We will send you the Application for Insurance and Evidence of Insurability within 10 business days of receiving your Eligibility Authorization Form. You must complete and submit your application to the insurer by October 31. If you miss this deadline, it will not be processed.
  • The insurer will need 2-3 weeks to process your application.
  • If your application is approved, you will receive an email from OTIP with instructions on how to enrol.

Once you complete your enrolment:

  • Your coverage and premiums are retroactive to September 1.
  • Eligible claims incurred on or after September 1 can be submitted online starting on September 1.
  • A new benefits card will be mailed to you.
  • Premiums will be deducted on the 10th of each month from your bank account.
  • Your initial premium payment may include retroactive premiums owing from the date your coverage takes effect, and the cumulative amount will be deducted from your bank account. Depending on when your enrolment information is received, processed and/or completed by you, this can result in retroactive premiums due.

Obtaining an LTO at the start or during the school year

If you obtain an eligible LTO position/contract, you will receive an email to enrol for coverage under the OECTA Employee Life and Health Trust (ELHT) Benefits Plan.

  • With the ELHT Benefits Plan, you will get funding based on your full-time equivalent (FTE).
  • Your OECTA OT Benefits Plan will be put on hold.
  • When your LTO ends, your coverage under the OECTA ELHT Benefits Plan also ends.
  • You will be put back into the OECTA OT Benefits Plan automatically. You will have the same level of coverage that you selected at enrolment. Your premium deductions will restart and an email confirmation will be sent to you.
  • Your claims history and benefit maximums will follow you from plan to plan.

NOTES:

  • Whether you obtain an LTO or not, to participate in the OECTA OT Benefits Plan, you must submit the Eligibility Authorization Form (excluding Toronto Catholic District School Board) and complete your enrolment.
