Important change for members covered by the OTIP Long Term Disability (LTD) plan

Effective January 1, 2020, the Trustees of the Ontario Teachers Insurance Plan (OTIP) are assuming all responsibility associated with management of the long term disability (LTD) plan. This will end the current insured arrangement with Manulife Financial and a new self-insured arrangement will take effect.

As the not for profit insurance provider of Ontario’s education community, assuming all management responsibilities ensures that every dollar generated by the plan stays within the plan. At the same time, it allows OTIP to provide optimal financial stability for all members today and in the future. Over the years, OTIP has increasingly assumed more of the risk, and we are now in position to take the next step in our evolution by assuming all financial responsibility associated with the LTD plan.

What this means to you

There will be no changes in plan features or rates as a result of this announcement. How we administer the plan and the service you experience from OTIP will also remain the same as it is today. If you become an LTD claimant, OTIP will continue to adjudicate your claim, issue claim payments and work with you to facilitate your return to work. You will continue to have access to the high level of service that you have come to expect from OTIP.

We are excited by the advantages this new arrangement will provide to you in both the short and long term and look forward to continuing to serve you with a plan that meets the unique needs of the education community.

Note: If your date of disability is prior to January 1, 2020, you will continue to be part of the existing LTD plan with Manulife Financial. OTIP will continue to manage your claim and there will be no change to your LTD benefits or how we issue payments to you.
