OTIP featured by Benefits Canada for adding a pharmacy role in the disability claims process

A recent Benefits Canada article features OTIP for an innovative initiative in which a pharmacy consultant was added to the Group Life and Disability Claims department.

Seeing an increase in work absences and disability claims, particularly related to mental health in recent years, OTIP identified the need for a new clinical resource to provide added support for plan members.

What began as a pilot project in June 2021 is now a fully integrated element of the Early Intervention Program and long term disability (LTD) claim management.

As Lead Pharmacist of Clinical and Early Intervention Services, Faizan Baig works directly with Early Intervention and LTD plan members to help them understand the details of their care from a pharmacological perspective. He takes a holistic approach to cases to identify areas for optimization in their treatment plans, enabling plan members to improve their health and return to work sooner.

Moving forward, OTIP is actively looking for opportunities to deepen the impact of this new role. This includes exploring areas like mental health and individual drug response as well as providing medical education sessions for staff.
