Addressing Summer Learning Loss: OTIP Supports United for Literacy’s Summer Literacy Camps
Each summer, United for Literacy partners with Indigenous communities across Northern Ontario to deliver the Summer Literacy Camps—a vital initiative that helps address summer learning loss and supports children and youth in returning to school confident and ready to learn.
For many students—especially those in remote or underserved areas—the summer break can result in setbacks in reading, writing, and math skills. United for Literacy’s summer camps help prevent summer learning loss by providing fun, culturally meaningful experiences that keep children and youth engaged in literacy, all within a supportive and inclusive environment.
In 2024, with support from OTIP and others, 540 children and youth participated in camps across Ontario and 600 literacy kits were distributed to support continued learning at home.
Feedback from participating families reinforces the program’s value with 98% of parents reporting that the camp helped prepare their child to return to school. One young camper from Nakina, Ontario shared: “I'm excited to read and be with my friends. I'm proud when I get to put a sticker on the rainbow when I finish a book.”

OTIP has proudly supported United for Literacy for the past 10 years, contributing over $500,000 to literacy programs and services for students across Ontario. This year, we’re continuing that commitment with an additional $50,000 donation to United for Literacy’s Summer Literacy Camps.
