10 Tips for Safe Travel

The time leading up to a vacation—especially that last check before you leave for the airport— can be both exciting and stressful. Inevitably, it seems, you board the plane, sit down and realize you’ve forgotten something. As inconvenient as this may be, if you are aware of and remember to do the following 10 things, you’ll spend less time worrying about the “what ifs” and more time enjoying your vacation.

Make sure your passport is valid.

As common sense as this sounds, you wouldn’t believe the number of people that realize days within travelling that their documents are either expired or close to it. Some countries require that your passport be valid for at least six months before travel.

Scan important documents.

We’ve all seen the movies where passports get stolen and travelers find themselves at the mercy of a foreign country’s government. Before you leave, scan your important documents (i.e., passport, insurance policy, visa, credit cards) and email them to yourself. Encrypt them with a password too, unless you have access to a secure cloud service. Keep your documents locked up in your hotel room safe, or hide them somewhere thieves won’t think to look.

Get travel insurance.

The last thing you need is to get stuck in a foreign country and have to take out your life savings just to pay the hospital bills. Don’t assume you’re already covered.

Get your shots.

Want to be bedridden for part of your trip? Don’t take a chance. Visit your doctor or local travel clinic to find out what vaccinations are recommended or mandatory for your destination.

Research your destination.

Find out about local customs and dress and obey the laws. Things that are okay at home may result in a serious penalty or fine elsewhere.

Separate your money.

Don’t keep all your money in one place. Keep some in a wallet, some in your hotel room and if you are traveling with someone, have them keep some of the cash as well. That way if you are separated or robbed, you won’t be stranded.

Say no to fanny packs and back pockets.

Nothing says tourist more than a fanny pack strapped across your midsection. Opt for a modern version instead. Look for a style that is easily concealed to keep thieves at bay. Keep your wallet in your front pocket where it’s difficult for a pick pocket to swipe without your knowledge.

Keep an eye on your belongings.

It only takes a second for someone to swipe your stuff— don’t make it easy for them. So whether you’re stopping for a bite to eat or just for a quick break, stay attached to your bags to make it harder for someone to grab.

Keep your valuables hidden.

Wearing a flashy new watch? You may as well have a target on your back. Thieves look for flashy items such as jewelry or expensive cameras. Keep your jewelry at home and your camera tucked away.

Share your travel details.

Leave a copy of your travel itinerary and emergency contact numbers with someone you trust at home. Finding out the locations and contact information for the Canadian consulate where you are travelling isn’t a bad idea either. Better to be safe than sorry.
