Technological advances supporting aging health: Here's what to try!

To support aging safely, there are always new technologies and tools being released. Some as simple and well-known as bathtub rails, non-slip mats, chair lifts, and improved lighting.

However, there are new technologies that may seem daunting to many but could be a gamechanger in senior independence and security. Here’s a look at some of the latest technologies and practical tips that can be considered as we age!

Wearable health monitors and fall detection monitors

Wearable health monitors, such as smartwatches and fitness trackers, have revolutionized how seniors manage their health and get help for falls faster. These devices can track vital signs like heart rate, movement, and blood pressure in real-time. Some advanced models even detect irregular heartbeats and provide alerts for potential health issues.

Did you know that 80% of senior injury-related hospitalizations are caused by falls? It is clear that supporting balance through exercise and ensuring your environment is trip-hazard free is more important than ever as we age. With newer devices, something as simple as a smartwatch now has the ability to detect a sudden fall and take action to contact first-responder support when needed most.

Examples:

  • Fitbit Charge 5: Tracks heart rate, sleep patterns, and physical activity. It also offers stress management tools.

  • Apple Watch Series 8, 9, 10 and Ultra 2: Features ECG, fitness tracking, fall detection, and emergency SOS.

  • Life Assure: Offers waterproof devices with fall detection.

  • TELUS Health Medical Alert: Provides a caregiver app and fall detection.

Tips for use:

  • Choose a device with a user-friendly interface, clear display, and can be worn all day (including water resistance).

  • Regularly sync the device with a smartphone app to keep track of health data.

  • Set up alerts and reminders for medication, hydration, and physical activity.

  • Set up designated emergency contacts in case of a fall.

  • Test the system regularly to ensure it functions correctly and familiarize yourself with its features.

Smart home technology

Smart home technology can significantly enhance safety and convenience for seniors. Voice-activated assistants like Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant can help with daily tasks, set reminders, and control other smart devices. Smart lighting and motion sensors can prevent falls by ensuring well-lit pathways, especially at night. Home monitoring systems can also alert caregivers if unusual activity is detected, such as a door left open.

Examples:

  • Amazon Echo or Google Nest devices: Voice-activated assistant for controlling smart devices and setting reminders.

Tips for use

  • Integrate smart home devices with a central hub for easy control.

  • Use voice commands to operate devices, reducing the need for physical interaction.

  • Regularly update the software to benefit from the latest features and security enhancements.

Telehealth services

Telehealth has become an essential tool for seniors, providing access to healthcare professionals from the comfort of home. Virtual consultations allow seniors to discuss health concerns, receive medical advice, and manage chronic conditions without the need for frequent in-person visits. Your walk-in clinic or physician or practitioner may also now offer virtual services you can access from the comfort of your home.

Examples:

  • Telehealth Ontario: Provides free and confidential medical advice.

  • Carepath: All RTIP members have access to Carepath Cancer Care Program and Elder Care Program.

  • Express Scripts Canada Pharmacy: All RTIP members can enjoy the convenience of home delivery for your maintenance prescription medications such as asthma, diabetes and high cholesterol.

Tips for use:

  • Ensure a stable internet connection for uninterrupted virtual consultations.

  • Familiarize yourself with the telehealth platform and its features before appointments.

  • Keep a list of questions and concerns ready to make the most of each consultation.

Cognitive health tools

Maintaining cognitive health is crucial for aging well. Digital tools and brain-training apps can help seniors stay mentally sharp by challenging memory, problem-solving, and focus. These tools are often designed to be engaging and enjoyable, making it easier for seniors to incorporate them into their daily routines.
